When winter arrives, EV performance takes a hit — range drops, power weakens, charging slows down, and in some cases, cars refuse to start. In northern regions, drivers often find their cars “on strike” in the morning, forcing route adjustments due to reduced battery output. The drop in charging efficiency under low temperatures makes things worse, leading to a frustrating driving experience.
Behind this issue lies a complex mix of causes, but the cathode material — the very heart of a power battery — is increasingly recognized as the key factor. In extremely cold environments, a material's conductivity, ion diffusion ability, and structural stability directly determine how well the battery cell performs in low temperatures.
Breaking Through the Cold-Weather Barrier
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are known for safety and longevity, but their low-temperature performance has long been a weakness. When the temperature drops below –20°C, conventional LFP materials suffer from sluggish lithium-ion transport, severe polarization, and sharp capacity loss — leading to shorter range and delayed start-up. For users in high-latitude or cold-climate regions, a stable low-temperature battery solution is no longer optional but essential.
T601 — Born for the Extreme Cold
To solve this challenge, LBM developed the T601 spherical ultra-low-temperature cathode material, specially designed for harsh winter conditions. At –20°C, T601 retains up to 75% of its capacity, while conventional LFP often drops below 50%. This is more than just a numerical edge — it's the difference between driving confidently in winter or being stranded. With a 0.1C discharge capacity of 122 mAh/g and a first-cycle efficiency of 75%, T601 ensures stable and strong power output for EVs even in freezing environments.
T601's innovation significantly enhances all-weather battery reliability and expands the frontier of EV usability in low-temperature regions.
From Material to Market — A Full-Chain Breakthrough
The launch of LBM T601 marks the end of low-temperature performance as a weakness for LFP batteries. Through material innovation, it empowers cells with stronger, more reliable winter performance — proving that “Good materials create great cells,” even in the coldest season.
